Custom Kitchen Cabinet Costs in Chicago Suburbs 2024

Wondering what custom kitchen cabinets cost in Chicagoland? Get real ballpark pricing, factors that drive cost, and tips from a local remodeling contractor.

If you've started researching a kitchen remodel, you've probably noticed that cabinet pricing is all over the map — literally. One website says $5,000, another says $50,000, and neither feels like it applies to your 1960s split-level in Western Springs or your newer build in Burr Ridge. We get this question a lot, so let's break down what actually drives custom cabinet costs here in the western and southwestern suburbs, without the vague ranges that don't tell you anything useful.

Stock, Semi-Custom, or Fully Custom — Know the Difference First

Before talking numbers, it's worth clarifying terms, because "custom" gets used loosely in this industry.

  • Stock cabinets come in standard sizes off the shelf. Least expensive, least flexible.
  • Semi-custom cabinets are built on standard cabinet boxes but allow for modified sizes, finishes, and storage features. This is where most Chicagoland kitchen remodels land.
  • Fully custom cabinets are built from scratch to your exact specifications — any dimension, any material, any configuration. This is what most people actually mean when they say "custom," and it's the most expensive route.

Many homeowners in older suburbs like Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, and Indian Head Park end up needing at least some custom work regardless of budget, simply because older homes have non-standard wall widths, bulkheads, or layouts that stock and semi-custom lines can't accommodate cleanly.

General Cost Ballparks

With the caveat that every kitchen is different, here's a rough sense of what homeowners in our service area typically budget for cabinetry alone (not including countertops, appliances, flooring, or labor for the full remodel):

  • Semi-custom cabinets: roughly $15,000–$30,000 for an average-sized kitchen
  • Fully custom cabinets: roughly $30,000–$60,000+, depending on materials, finishes, and complexity

For a full kitchen remodel — cabinets plus countertops, flooring, lighting, plumbing, and labor — total project costs in our area commonly run higher than cabinets alone would suggest. We're intentionally keeping these as wide ranges because the honest answer is: it depends on your kitchen's size, the materials you choose, and how much of your existing layout changes. A consultation is really the only way to get a number you can rely on.

What Actually Moves the Price Up or Down

Materials. Solid wood (maple, oak, cherry) costs more than plywood boxes with veneer fronts. Finish quality — paint-grade vs. stain-grade, factory finishes vs. hand-applied — also shifts cost meaningfully.

Kitchen size and layout changes. A straightforward reface or cabinet swap in the same footprint costs far less than moving plumbing, relocating a range, or knocking out a wall between kitchen and dining room — which is a common request in older Hinsdale and Western Springs colonials with more closed-off floor plans.

Storage features. Soft-close drawers, pull-out shelving, built-in spice racks, appliance garages, and custom pantry systems all add cost but also add real daily function — worth discussing early so they're built in rather than added later.

Ceiling height and layout quirks. Many homes in Oak Brook and Palos Park have vaulted or higher ceilings in the kitchen, which means custom upper cabinets or additional millwork to avoid an awkward gap — another reason truly custom work costs more than off-the-shelf.

Local labor and installation. Skilled cabinet installation in this market reflects the cost of experienced tradespeople who do this work full-time, not as a side job. It's not the place to cut corners — poorly installed cabinets show up as uneven doors and gaps within a year or two.

Timing Considerations for Chicagoland Homeowners

If you're planning ahead, late fall through winter is often a good time to schedule cabinet-focused kitchen work. Demand for interior remodeling tends to ease up once outdoor construction season winds down, which can mean more scheduling flexibility. Custom cabinets also typically require lead time for fabrication — often several weeks to a couple of months — so if you're hoping for a finished kitchen by a holiday or a spring sale, it pays to start the process well in advance.

Permitting is usually straightforward for a kitchen remodel that doesn't involve structural changes or significant electrical/plumbing relocation, but each suburb handles permits a little differently. Burr Ridge, Hinsdale, and Oak Brook each have their own village requirements, and your contractor should be handling that process for you, not leaving you to figure it out.

Getting an Accurate Number for Your Kitchen

Any range you read online — including the ones above — is a starting point, not a quote. The only way to know what your kitchen will actually cost is to have someone look at the space, talk through your goals, and understand your home's specific layout. That's true whether you're updating a modest galley kitchen in Clarendon Hills or doing a full gut renovation in a larger Burr Ridge home.

If you want a sense of the range of finishes and layouts we've worked with across the area, our kitchen remodeling page and project gallery are good places to start. Many of our clients also end up folding in a bathroom update or a broader full-home renovation once they see what's possible — worth mentioning during your consultation if that's on your mind too.
